Corey Webster CB LSU 6’ 204
By: Robert Davis

Corey Webster emerged as arguably the top corner in college football last year. In just his second season on defense after moving over from wide receiver, Webster displayed big play ability on a consistent basis for the Tigers. He racked up various awards, including All American status from different publications after picking off 7 passes, with an amazing 25 pass break ups. His two year totals at corner are great 4 year numbers for many, having 14 INT’s and 42 pass break ups.

Webster possesses great all around skills for a cornerback. He has very good size, allowing him to match up with some of the bigger wideouts he may face. He plays even bigger, as he is one of the more physical corners in college football. What makes him such a high rated prospect is that along with that size and strength, he is an excellent athlete and has the speed to keep up with most receivers he comes across. He has a great nose for the ball, and is always around the action. He makes a lot of plays on the ball, either knocking it away or picking it off, and in the run game, he is very active.

The biggest downside with Webster is that he needs more time to develop as a cornerback. His physical package is awesome, but he has had some problems at times with the technique and mental responsibility of the position. In zone coverage, he’ll try to read the coverage and leave his area to try and make the big play, and it hurts him at times. He needs to be more disciplined and hold his ground instead of trying to make a big play all the time. He has some trouble with quicker receivers when he plays off the line with them, and loses a step when he has to turn and run with them. Webster is also a little over aggressive when the ball is in the air. While he is as good as any corner in the nation at making plays on the ball, he often makes contact with receivers after the 5 yard mark, and while the ball is in the air. College officials have been somewhat lenient with him on the contact rules, but in the NFL, it is really going to hurt him.

Corey Webster is a fine corner prospect. He reminds me of Quentin Jammer when he came out a couple years ago, maybe a step faster. He has all the physical tools to be a great NFL corner, he just has a few things to learn at the position. I believe Webster’s name will be called at some point in the middle of the first round.
