Anthony Schlegel

NFL Draft News

Anthony Schlegel LB 6’1 255 Ohio St.
By: Robert Davis

Anthony Schlegel started his college career in the Air Force Academy. In 2002, he was voted team captain as a sophomore at Air Force. He finished the season with 116 tackles, 10 for loss, with 3 sacks. He sat out in 2003 due to transfer rules, but made his presence felt during his first season on the field with the Buckeyes. He didn’t start until Mike D’Andrea got hurt yet again, but he still managed to finish the season with 84 tackles, 10.5 for loss, with 3.5 sacks. As a senior this year, Schlegel's numbers dipped just slightly, but he still had a solid campaign. He finished the year with 82 tackles, seven for loss, to go along with two sacks.

Schlegel is the ideal inside linebacker. He’s built very thick, is strong, and not afraid to mix it up and take on lineman. He is great at plays in front of him. He reads plays quickly, and can take on a blocker, and still make the play. His strength is stopping the run between the tackles. He will not be outworked on the field, and has that mean streak linebackers need to have.

Athletically, Schlegel does not have the ability of his teammates, Carpenter and Hawk. He can’t make plays solely on his physical ability, because it’s simply not there. He is not a guy you want dropping into coverage, and he is a step slow to plays on the outside. He’s also shorter than you like your linebackers to be, with a listed height of only 6’1.

Anthony Schlegel looks to be a very good two down run stuffer, but nothing more than that at the next level. While his teammates may hear their name called in the first round, Schlegel will not hear his name called on Day One. He likely falls into the fifth round area. He’s a college standout that is probably only a situational player at the next level because of his physical limitations. His instincts and toughness should find him a roster spot on some team though.
