Devin Hester

NFL Draft News

Devin Hester CB/WR 5'11 186 Miami
By: Robert Davis

There are not many players as explosive and versatile as Devin Hester. He's made an impact at WR, CB, KR, and PR during his three years at Miami. Hester has six career special teams touchdowns, four on punts and two on kicks. On offense, he totalled 196 receiving yards, 134 rushing yards, and one touchdown. On defense, Hester picked off five passes to go with 28 tackles, and a sack. He also was the 2004 Big East Indoor long jump champion.

Hester is a truly explosive athlete. He has fantastic speed, quickness, and acceleration. He is very versatile and could play a number of roles in the NFL, having spent time at wideout, corner, and on special teams. As a corner, he has all the physical tools necessary to be a standout cover man, and the nose for the ball to make plays. The return game is where his biggest impact is felt. Hester is an excellent return man on both kicks and punts and will instantly upgrade his teams return ability.

With Hester flopping between offense and defense, he does not have a true position. His only real value right now is as a return man because as a receiver or corner he is extremely raw. He will start out almost at the bottom when having to learn one true position in the NFL.

Hester is a very intriguing prospect. He has the talent to shine on offense or defense, but is very raw on either side of the ball. With his lack of development there are concerns that he may only develop into a return specialist in the NFL. Even if that is his only role, Hester can impact the game. He is awesome with the ball in his hands. Teams will most likely try him at corner first, and wide receiver as a fall back option. He is a player with very high upside on either side of the ball, but brings a lot of question marks as well.
