Leon Washington

NFL Draft News

Leon Washington RB 5'8 201 Florida St.
By: Robert Davis

Washington was never able to truly establish himself as an elite college back, but he still made a big impact for the Noles running back by committee. His best statistical season came as a junior when he earned 2nd team All ACC honors after rushing for 951 yards and seven touchdowns. He had arguably just as big of an impact as a senior, despite only rushing for 400 yards and three touchdowns. In addition to his ability on the ground, Washington became a factor as a receiver, hauling in 25passes for 279 yards and one touchdown.

Washington has developed into the ideal third down back. He has excellent quickness, and shows the ability to make people miss and accelerate very quickly. Once into space, he shows his jets and can outrun defenders. His hands have improved over his career and he is now a legitimate threat out of the backfield. Washington has also shown the ability to return punts and kicks, enhancing his value as a backup running back. His versatility is shown by the fact that he is the only FSU player ever to score a touchdown in five different ways: reception, rush, punt return, kick return, and fumble return.

As is the common theme with a lot of backs this year, Washington's biggest drawback is his lack of size. He does not have the size or strength to consistenty run between the tackles and take a beating. Despite sharing the load as a Seminole, he still has had some durability issues, and probably does not have what it takes to be a feature back in the NFL.

Even though he may not be an everydown back, Washington could play a big role for a team in the league. His ability as a change of pace runner, receiver, and return man could make him very valuable. He's not a great fit if you are looking for a feature back, but he is a fine candidate for a team looking for a change of pace back.
