Maurice Stovall

NFL Draft News

Maurice Stovall WR 6'4 217 Notre Dame
By: Robert Davis

NFL Combine Stats: 40-yard dash - 4.58

What a difference a coach can make. In three seasons at Notre Dame, Stovall caught 61 passes for 1,046 yards and seven touchdowns. In his only season with Charlie Weis, Stovall hauled in 60 balls for 1,023 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Stovall has excellent size for the WR position, and he knows how to use it. He is a legitimate threat over the middle and in the red zone because of his size. He can shield off defenders, and with his leaping ability, can go up and get the ball in one on one situations. He shows very good hands and the ability to pluck the ball out of the air.

While he is not slow, Stovall lacks the speed to be a real playmaker as a wideout. He may be relegated to intermediate routes. Also of concern is that he has only one year of standout play. Before this season, his hands were inconsistent, and he was slow on the field. Is he a product of the system, or did Weis just find a way to get him to reach his potential?

When Charlie Weis took over, he asked Stovall to shed some weight to get quicker. It helped a lot. Stovall is a very good possession wideout prospect, and really took to Weis' coaching. His stock has continued to rise all season, and after clocking a 4.58 at the combine, he should hear his name called in the second or third round.
