New Free Agency Winners and Losers

Zak DeOssie LB 6'5 250 Brown 4.69

By: Robert Davis

Zak DeOssie had a solid freshman season in which he posted 27 tackles, 2.5 for loss, with a sack and an interception on the year. He really came on and made a name for himself as a sophomore, where he finished the year with 98 tackles, 11.5 for loss, and 3.5 sacks. As a junior, he had 80 tackles, 12 for loss, with five sacks. DeOssie finished his career with a career high 103 tackles, 10.5 for loss, and a sack.

DeOssie has a lot of potential at the next level. He has a massive frame. He is very tall, and despite weighing 250lbs, may have more room for growth. For a player of his dimensions, he has excellent closing speed and can run plays down all over the field. DeOssie brings a lot of versatility to the field as well. He can play inside or out, and has even served as the teams long snapper, following in his father Steve’s footsteps.

Despite growing up with a football father, DeOssie still relies on his physical skill too much. With his height, he can allow blockers to get under him and take him out of running plays. His height may also cause some problems in coverage, when he needs to change directions quickly.

DeOssie is an intriguing prospect. He has shown all around talent at linebacker, and the ability to play multiple positions. He may be able to play inside or out in a 3-4 defense, and may be able to play DE in a 4-3 with some added bulk. He followed his success up with a solid post season circuit. While he is a work in progress, his upside and his ability to contribute on special teams may get him taken higher than one might think.
