New Free Agency Winners and Losers

Brad Cottam TE 6'8 270 Tennessee 4.63

By: Robert Davis

Cottam did not make much of an impact his first two seasons as a receiver, as he caught just two balls for 34 yards, both of them coming as a freshman. As a junior he had his best statistical season, catching 14 balls for 182 yards. Cottam was attempting to gain a sixth year of eligibility because of a wrist injury, but was denied and played the final five games of his senior year, hauling in five balls for 125 yards and a touchdown.

The obvious thing that jumps out about Cottam is his size. He has amazing size, and could cause major mismatch problems as a receiver. Nobody can compete with his size on the football field. He combines that massive frame with very good athleticism for a player with his dimensions, and has surprising speed on the field. Cottam is a hard worker, willing to put in the work to improve his game.

Injuries have really derailed Cottam’s college career. He has missed time due to shoulder and wrist surgeries and a sports hernia during his career. That has hindered his development and he never became as big an offensive threat as his natural talents suggest. With his size he should be an overpowering blocker, but he is not as physical as he needs to be.

Cottam has a physical marvel, but he needs work as a football player. All the time on the sidelines has kept him from developing and producing like a top prospect should. You cannot teach the natural skills he has, and someone will take a chance on him because of that. He has a lot of potential, but has just as many questions.
