Colt Brennan QB 6’2 207 Hawaii

By: Robert Davis

Brennan started his career at Colorado but he was dismissed after one season because of an off the field issue. After a year at Saddleback(CA) Community College, he found his way to Hawaii and has been breaking records ever since. In his first season there, he threw for 4,301 yards while completing 68% of his passes for 36 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. As a junior last year, he threw for 5,549 yards while completing an amazing 72.6% for 58 TD’s and just 12 INT’s. Brennan did not disappoint as a senior, living up to the expectations he set for himself as a junior. It would have been impossible to duplicate last years numbers, especially after missing virtually two games with an ankle injury and a concussion, but Brennan did his best. He threw for 4,174 yards, while completing 71.4% of his passes for 38 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, while becoming a Heisman finalist.

Brennan has a gunslinger’s mentality. He believes in his ability to carry an offense with his right arm, and that confidence is obvious from the first snap. He will sit in the pocket and deliver the football, and has the arm to complete passes all over the field. He has been extremely efficient when you consider the amount of throws he makes to the amount of interceptions he has. He has shown impressive accuracy on the intermediate routes and is on point with most of his throws. Brennan is also a solid athlete that shows the mobility to move around in the pocket to elude the rush and buy more time to make plays.

The obvious issue with Brennan is the offense he plays in. The numbers he puts up makes you wonder if he is just a product of the system or a legit talent. Hawaii’s offense is built to make a QB post insane numbers, and Brennan has done just that. He will need to prove he has the intelligence to learn a more conventional offense in post season interviews. Brennan also has a rather thin frame and will have to bulk up to withstand the beating he will take as a pocket passer. His throwing motion also has its share of critics and will likely need to be tweaked in the NFL. He pleaded guilty to burglary and trespassing while at Colorado, but the serious charge of sexual assault was dismissed. That is an issue that appears to be behind him, but he will have to answer questions about the incident over and over again as the draft approaches.

People either love Brennan or hate him. He has a nice blend of skills, but he will always face the concern of being a system quarterback until he is given the opportunity to prove otherwise. With his lack of ideal physical tools and the questions around his offense, Brennan may find it hard to be taken in the first three rounds. You can’t question his success, but you can his pro potential.
