Josh Freeman QB Kansas St. 6'6 248 Jr. 4.97

Freeman originally committed to Nebraska, but decided in the end that Manhattan, KS was the place for him. He played in 11 games as a freshman, starting the final nine. He threw for 1,780 yards while completing just under 52% of his passes for six touchdowns and 15 interceptions. The lumps he took that year prepared him for his sophomore year, and his play improved drastically. He threw for 3,353 yards while improving his accuracy to 63.3% to go along with an 18/11 touchdown to interception ratio. Freeman continued to improve and had a very good junior campaign for the Wildcats. He threw for 2,945 yards while completing 58.6% of his passes for 20 touchdowns and just eight interceptions. He also emerged as a rushing threat, running for 404 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground.

Strengths

You could not draw up a better quarterback prospect from a physial standpoint than Freeman. He is tall and has a frame that should continue to pack on weight naturally. He has an amazing arm and can get the ball where it needs to be with extreme ease. Freeman is also a surprising athlete for a strong armed pocket passer, and has enough mobility to elude the rush and buy time to make things happen. His game has improved each season in college, and there is no reason to see his progress stop now. His upside is tremendous. He was just 20 years old during his entire junior season, and will be 21 as a rookie. There is a lot of room for development for such a young player, and he has already established himself as a big time prospect.

Weaknesses

Freeman is going to need some time to work on his game. He is raw as a passer, and gets by on his natural gifts right now. His accuracy and mechanics are erratic, and he is too confident in his arm. He thinks he can fit the ball into any spot, and he needs to make better decisions on the field.

Future

Freeman probably should have returned to school for his senior year. With his natural ability and his continued progress, he could have elevated his game to be in contention for the top overall spot. His upside is tremendous, and should go in the first round but he could have made a lot more money up front and been better prepared for the NFL with another year in college. As expected, Freeman has had an excellent post season. He’s been as impressive as any quarterback, showing off his arm, frame, and natural athleticism for everyone to see. He has solidified his stock in the first round, and has as much potential as any QB available this year. He may need a little time to refine his skills, but the kid has big time ability.
