Rodney Ferguson RB 6’ 234 New Mexico

By: Robert Davis

Ferguson did not accomplish much early in his career at New Mexico with the presence of DonTrell Moore, but what he has done since has been very impressive. As a sophomore in 2006, Ferguson ran for 1,309 yards and seven touchdowns to go with 291 yards and two touchdowns on 29 receptions. As a junior, he repeated as an All MWC 1st team selection after rushing for 1,177 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground, added to the 264 yards and a touchdown on 18 receptions. He had another fine season in 2008, earning All MWC 2nd team honors after rushing for 1,105 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Strengths

Ferguson is one of the best interior runners in the draft. He is a physical runner between the tackles that can really carry the load. Ferguson is very strong, runs hard, and is a load to bring down. The first defender find it tough to bring him down as his strength and determination allow him to pick up quite a few yards after contact. He also shows impressive hands for a 230+ lber and is a legitimate threat as a receiver. With his bulk, strength, and receiving ability Ferguson could also project to fullback in the NFL.

Weaknesses

Ferguson may lack the burst to hit the holes he hits in college. You have to be much quicker to and through the hole, and that is not Ferguson’s strong point. He will pick up the tough yardage but he may lack the ability to make plays consistent enough to be a starting running back in the NFL.

Future

Ferguson would fit in a power running scheme as a true running back, but may find it tough hitting holes elsewhere. His lack of burst could cause a switch to fullback, where he may have some solid potential. If he can show he can play fullback and be a short yardage runner, Ferguson could play in the NFL for a long time.
